The Moon will be immersed in the Earth's shadow on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at 20:12 UTC. The Sun will be at 24º Gemini and the Moon at 24º Sagittarius.

The Earth will be between the essences of yin (moon) and yang (sun) energy, where for a moment the Earth’s shadow will entirely swallow the Moon, blocking out the flow of yang energy.

June 15, 2011 Lunar Eclipse Facts

This eclipse is a part of Saros Cycle 130. This particular cycle will experience 72 various eclipses, including 14 lunar. A Saros Cycle lasts 6,585.3 days (18 years, 11 days, and 8 hours).

This is a rare eclipse in which the moon will pass in the center of the Earth’s shadow. The last total center lunar eclipse was on July 16, 2000. The next will occur on July 27, 2018.

The penumbral eclipse begins at 17:24 UTC and the penumbral eclipse ends at 23:00 UTC. It will be visible from Asia and Africa.

The Gemini and Sagittarius Eclipse Axis

The Sun in Gemini is an active, communicative energy in which a vast amount of information flows in every direction. This energy compels the mind to quest for information, gather knowledge, and discover the gap that exists between the objects of this dualistic universe.

The Moon in Sagittarius seeks stimulation and thrives when swimming in freedom. This lunar energy is hungry for experience, and emotionally responsive to life in waves of enthusiasm. The Moon’s yin attributes speak of a mind and a heart that are open to new ideas, and actively seeks ways to express fresh ideas with the purpose to share with and edify other beings.

The Gemini / Sagittarius astrological axis emphasizes a philosophical mindset. Where one seeks to collect and gather information, without bias for one side or the other. The axis emphasizes education, and the betterment of the human experience through knowledge, through sharing, and through teaching.

The Sagittarius role is inclined to share, to instruct, and express in a creative and broad fashion the truths and knowledge that Gemini collects. Gemini is detail oriented, and Sagittarius specializes in the bigger picture.

This late spring lunar event signifies that elements of ever increasing information and communication channels in our world are growing wild. The nodal axis indicates how the myriad of channels can be employed to serve the public; through the communication and relay of accurate and truthful information across the globe.

The June 15, 2011 Lunar Eclipse: The Lunar Nodes and Ophiuchus

This eclipse will occur on the ascending node. The lunar nodes are mathematical points in space where the trajectory of the moon’s orbit intersects a point on the ecliptic path of the Sun. The moon rises from below the ecliptic, crosses it, and ascends above it; thus it is called the ascending node. In astrological terms it is called the North Node.

The descending node is the point where the moon approaches the Sun’s ecliptic line from above, intersects at an angle, and descends below the path of the Sun. This is called the South Node in astrology. The two nodes are always diametrically opposed, and are merely mathematical points in space.

The North Node represents the goal and area of focus for our higher aspirations. These are the achievements we strive to accomplish, with an altruistic and compassionate purpose.

The South Node represents lessons and areas of conflict that we carry from ancient roots. Some South Node tools are gifts to help us through this journey. Other aspects are trials that we have not mastered during prior experience in the wheel of life. The South Node also indicates charges around unresolved karma.

The North Node represents a threshold to cross into the future, while the South Node is symbolic of the porthole to the ancient mists from which we emerged into this life.

Astrological Qualities of the Lunar Eclipse

This lunar eclipse, on the North Node, in the Gemini / Sagittarius axis, hints at a future with advanced communication technologies, and of a human comprehension that could blur in the wash of details from such accelerated distribution of disparate information. The North Node speaks of disseminating fields of information and knowledge from across the spans of nations and ideology and bridging the chasms between existing polarities.

There is a strong foundation of belief systems across the world, acting as a good base for universal growth and the cultivation of global compassion. Yet those global systems have taken root in the bedrock of nations, cultures, and ideologies. The sharing of detailed and erudite information regarding faiths and belief systems may blur borders of distinction and preference; which is a Sagittarian trait.

During the lunar eclipse the North Node will be in the lower portion of the constellation Ophiuchus, just above Scorpio. Ophiuchus, which derived from the Hebrew, Afeichus, means “the serpent held” must slay Scorpio: the symbol of the dark, primal side of the human psyche.

Quite literally the Earth and all her inhabitants will be positioned symmetrically in between the major forces of yin and yang energy in our geocentric cosmos. The Moon will rise from the depths of the realm of Scorpio, shrouded in the cosmic shade of the Earth.
